Foster Youth Advancement Projects:

Generation Fate is committed to providing youth in foster care with relevant and effective programs. Our programs rely on leveraging the rich resources within our community in order to create a sustainable system of support and services. Building the assets of our children in foster care will insure the long term healthy development of individuals and of communities.

Gen Fate Leadership Program [Summer 2008]

[Goals]

The leadership program’s primary objectives are to provide supplemental enrichment and educational programs and to create opportunities for connection and belongingness for our foster youth.

[Summary]

In researching programs currently available for foster youth we discovered a summer camp in Santa Cruz County and a leadership workshop in Sacramento County that are very effective in empowering and educating foster children. In summary:

The camp in Santa Cruz County has been running for over 20 years and served thousands of foster youth. In a carefree outdoor environment, children are paired with mentors and introduced to new activities. Invited back every summer until they are fifteen years old, foster youth have found a home away from home in the Santa Cruz Mountains that has changed their lives forever.

Both programs above assist in filling these voids and we intend to combine the two and offer them as one leadership program to foster youth in Sacramento and Placer County. Working closely with the directors and staff from each program we will replicate these models to promote healthier and resilient foster children.

During this program children will learn about nature, health, life skills, music, sports and many other activities. Introducing children to a wide variety of activities will allow them to self assess where their passion lies and to follow that passion starting at a young age. While being supported by our organization, professional educators and mentors, these children will have the opportunity to follow their dreams supported by a loving community

The program is designed to operate with successive generations of foster youth. That is, a cohort of 4th – 6th graders will be added each year to expand the number of children served. Furthermore, an expanded scope of services is currently in development. This will include monthly program activities on a year-round basis. Additional details on these two components are available upon request.
